Situated in the Glenoaks Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles, our latest residential interior renovation is an update to a 1930s cottage. The young couple that own the home tasked us with creating a modern space that retained the charm and original spirit of the home’s design. To improve the segmented floor plan, add brightness and infuse the space with natural light, we updated the home’s layout by removing a series of interior hallways and doors that lends a more open flow to the home. A series of new arched entryways delineates between spaces while establishing a cohesive design language of repeating curves that are echoed in much of the furnishings and custom millwork. The use of natural wood tones, terracotta tile and a color palette of pinks, greens and neutrals also add to the sense of warmth and aesthetically unify the home.

In addition to redesigning both bathrooms, one of the key interventions was removing the existing den to make way for a larger kitchen with a greater sense of connection to the outdoor space. A more compact adjacent room where the kitchen once stood has made way for an intimate lounge. Clad in floor-to-ceiling maple wall paneling and wrapped by a custom, curved built-in sofa, the studio has created a more private counterpoint to the home’s larger living room that gives the couple a space to unwind and relax.
