Mr. Hurt’s kitchen remodel reimagines a once-enclosed space within a sprawling mid-century residence in San Marino. Originally a ranch house expanded in the 1990s, the home’s kitchen remained closed off from the main living areas and surrounding landscape. The design opens the space to create a stronger connection to adjacent rooms and views of the mature oaks and garden beyond.
In collaboration with Henrybuilt, the layout was reconfigured to improve flow and sightlines, including a coffee bar that frames the landscape. Walnut cabinetry complements existing mahogany windows and Douglas fir paneling, while soapstone countertops introduce a rich, moody palette.
The entryway was also updated with a custom wood slab shelf by Angel City Lumber, crafted from an oak tree felled on the property—adding a meaningful connection to the site.
