The Tree House

Originally purchased with the intention of building an addition, the the Treehouse’s steep lot made construction a challenge. The owner’s love of the site, its generous yard and sweeping views of the city led both client and designers to change course - embracing the home’s existing footprint and setting out to maximize the functionality of the interiors and outdoor space.
The result is the transformation of a humble 700 sq ft cottage into a warm and intimate space, with every square inch better suited to the couple’s daily life as well as their love of hosting and entertaining friends. We drew inspiration from Sea Ranch, the coastal California community, its humble structures embedded into the landscape and use of natural materials and redesigned the patio, creating a new dining, grill and prep area off the living room that extends the living space to the property’s generous and picturesque yard.
